Best Day Ever

Best Day Ever by Kaira Rouda is a slow burning tale of domestic suspense. The story unfolds over almost a 24-hour period from the point of view of Paul, the husband and a narcissist. I love a good unreliable narrator and that is exactly what Paul is. This one didn’t have a shocking ending but I don’t feel as though it diminished the quality of the book. As Paul and his wife, Mia, go away for a weekend to their second home, the story of their ‘perfect marriage’ begins to unfold. I consider this one a slow burn because from the beginning you can tell that something bad is lurking, you can practically put your finger on what it is. But, just like with any horrible news story unfolding you can’t change the channel, you want to know how and why this is happening and it seems to be playing out in slow motion. Despite likely being able to predict the ending from early on, you still have unanswered questions so you must keep reading. I found this one to read as more of a suspense novel rather than a thriller, please take that into account when deciding if this is the right read for you.

If slow burning suspense novels with an unreliable narrator interests you, then this is the book for you!

I give Best Day Ever 4 greedy stars out of 5.

I feel as though the quality of the physical book needs to mentioned as well. The cover of Best Day Ever is stunning, it has texture and grit. The red envelope seems to pop right off the page. Inside, the font for the title page and chapter titles is perfection and the pages have deckled edges. This is one book you must have on your bookshelf, y'all.
