The Weight of Lies
fas·ci·nat·ing | adjective | extremely interesting | captivating
The Weight of Lies by Emily Carpenter was a fascinating tale of intricate secrets and lies. It is an alternating story of present day life and excerpts from a book, Kitten, based on the past. Are the events expressed in the book fiction or truth? I promise you will be guessing until the very end.
There are many complex elements woven throughout the lives of these characters. You have a difficult mother-daughter relationship, but not in the cliché way you might imagine. You have Native American history that at times somewhat parallel some present day injustices. The ancestry and lineage as it relates to the characters absolutely takes the story to the next level. You also have a bit of 'cult' culture, which is easy to imagine considering our current culture that places celebrities and the like on pedestals with a group of crazed fans who will defend them till the end.
The references from the famous book, Kitten, are of a murder that happened 40 years ago. I loved the passages from Kitten, I wish it was an actual book that I could read from start to finish. Horror isn't typically a genre I would pick up to read, but I will say Kitten's 70's horror vibe was masterfully written. I loved everything about it. Literally, everything.
If you like uber creepy, constantly looking over your shoulder with hints of horror, The Weight of Lies is for you. I assure you, this is one you do not want to miss.
I give this 5 creepy good stars out of 5!!
